Laurie Berkner’s Pillowland

In this charming new production from New York City Children’s Theater, slumber entails an actual journey, which little audience members can join. Barbara Zinn Krieger, who wrote the script, and Jonathan Shmidt Chapman, who devised the staging, have expanded the song’s premise, inventing a voyage in which theatergoers can blow on a sail, make waves, meet royalty, dine at a pretend banquet, have a mock pillow fight, sing and ultimately help a king find rest.

While parents might not find those sleepless nights quite as charming, kiddos will likely relate and be thrilled to join the adventure. Audience members are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite pajamas to really get into character. In order to keep them engaged throughout the show, kids are invited to interact as the plot unfolds.

They loved this novel experience of an interactive performance. Kids and adults were all laughing hysterically and embracing the fun. All of the kids were encouraged to participate and laugh throughout the show. Veteran or newbie, your kids do not want to miss this amazing show! And, as huge fans of Laurie Berkner, we loved getting to see her song “Pillowland” come to life.

For the youngest of theatergoers (ages 2 to 5), Pillowland, produced by New York City Children’s Theater, is inspired by kindie rocker Laurie Berkner’s song of the same name. Kids are encouraged to wear their pajamas to this 30-minute interactive show that takes them on a trip to the titular destination. Kids get a primo spot in the small performance area, and parents can join them or hang back and sit in chairs.

Loved it! Very creative set, played with love and understanding of the audience. Our little one was all over the place and it wasn’t a problem. Fosters imagination and creativity at this very young age. Thank you for such a great experience. For sure a treasured memory.

It was so fun! My toddler had a great morning and we all found it very special. Even my husband was happy we went!

Wonderful piece of interactional theatre, perfect for young children. The performers are energetic, creative and very adept at including the children in the audience in the action happening on stage. Lots of fun for all.

My two-year-old and four-year-old had a blast. A wonderful show, everyone is friendly and the story is perfect for toddlers.
