Middle School Playwriting Compeition: Stella’s Journey

May 31, 2017 | Spotlights

Each year, middle school students from all five boroughs submit their plays to our Middle School Playwriting Competition! This year we had a record number of incredible playwrights submit their work; it was so hard to choose five for our staged reading.

Our five finalists: Emily, Madison, Nimoratul, Stella and Tula each shared their unique perspective and voice through their work and we were extremely proud to honor each of them as Regional Finalists.

Today we’re excited to bring you our young playwrights reflections on the Middle School Playwriting Competition process. Read about Stella’s Middle School Playwriting Competition journey:

Playwriting for me is all about creativity. It’s amazing to write something at your desk in your pajamas one day, and then hear it being read on a stage with real actors a month or so later. Creativity is a big part of playwriting– you have to come up with characters and a plot, and then actually write everything down and have the people speak back and forth, along with stage directions. It’s harder than writing a book in a way, but that’s why I love it. It gives you a huge challenge.

I loved being a part of New York City Children’s Theater Young Playwrights for Change Play Competition. It was so amazing seeing my characters come to life at the rehearsal with the actors and directors and then actually seeing it on a stage being read for an audience. It can’t get better than that!

My play, which is entitled “Becky’s World”, is about a girl who bullies others because she is unhappy at home. It was inspired by many true facts– I have found that girls can be very nasty to each other when they are upset or jealous about something, even if you didn’t do anything to them personally. People in general are often unhappy with who they are, or how life is working out for them. My play focuses on the main girl, Becky, and her time in and out of school.

My advice to young future playwrights is to keep going, no matter how frustrated you get. Writing “Becky’s World” took months, and I had to redo it a few times. Keep going, follow your dreams, and you’ll get to where you want to go!
